Why Would Oscar Wilde Object to Ridicule?

Did Oscar Wilde, master of satire and ridicule himself, really say, “Ridicule is the tribute paid to the genius by the mediocrities”? No, not exactly, and his point was not to diminish satire or ridicule, but rather to criticize the aims of one group’s use of it.
